Whenever the weather is dull and unwelcoming, (yes I do realise I have just described the year long climate in England) and the rain lashes down, a perfect feast for winter nights is my mother’s dahl with freshly made dahl puri – a velveteen flat bread filled with a dry spiced chana dahl). It’s hard to believe that such a heart warming yet healthy dish could be so simple to prepare. I can still remember returning home from school when I was no more than five years old. My hands and feet frozen from the icy weather and my mother had prepared dahl with dumplings. I think that was precisely when my aversion for spicy foods began to evaporate as quickly as the ice on my boots. Simply lovely!
